Don’t Tell, It’s A Surprise.

Rosemary Barnett and her family are organizing an effort to celebrate Bob Barnett’s birthday. They are asking all of Bob’s friends to send cards and letters to him in time for his birthday on January 19. This is supposed to be a surprise. That should work since Bob doesn’t get out in the cold much and Rosemary won’t be giving him a copy of the paper. So that means that none of you can call and ask him about his birthday until after the 19th. Most of you know Bob as the ACCHS bus mechanic and probably have memories that you could share. I know I have a few. Bob bought me a new necktie shortly after he cut mine in half as I was getting on Bus # 29. That pocket knife looked pretty big as it was getting close to my throat. I was glad he only cut the tie. Bob moved here as a baby almost 80 years ago. He is a product of ACCHS. In fact his Senior year of high school he was a bus driver. He graduated in 1943 and went into the Army serving in the Engineers as a Radio Operator. When he was released from the military in 1946 he worked in the shop of his father on Main St. where the Tiger is now located. In January of 1951 he began his career in the Bus garage of ACCHS and remained there as the Transportation Director until his retirement in 1987. He didn’t just work there. He was involved in the community in other ways. He was the instigator of the first Christmas lights on Main St. in 1946 and helped with the installation. He served the community on City Council and also as Mayor in the late 60’s. During that time the Gas system was completed and the Municipal Pool was built. It would be really nice to see a bunch of cards and stories arrive just before his birthday. Rosemary will be gathering them together and keep them until the 19th. So go ahead and send them early. If you have a photo you want to share feel free to send those along. Bonnie Kramer shared this one with me to share in this issue. Does anyone recognize who is standing with Bob?
EXCUSES, EXCUSES.........
This last week has been a challenge. I experienced a complete computer failure and as a result the Newsleaf had to go into intensive care. All of my issues and files were lost that were created in the last 2 months. Also lost were the email addresses of those expecting to receive delivery of their new issues via the internet. I am asking for your help in restoring that data to my computer. If you wish to have this publication sent via email or have a friend or relative that wishes to be on the same list, please send the address to me. Of course, if you have received this, I must have your address. It will be hard to put everything back as it was but with your help I will try. SC
A Thank You from a Long Way Off
Finally brought your e-mail address to the computer center so I could send you a thank you note. I hope you all had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New year. I get the newsleaf and read it front to back to see who is doing what during the month. If you could e-mail it to me it would save you some postage.
My normal e-mail is duane.r.forbes@us.army.mil I want to thank everyone for the cards and letters over the last year, all the care packages that were sent and the support we have been given. A little piece of home with each and every one helps us make it through this time away from friends and family. Thank you for everything, SSG Duane R. Forbes; ISG/SCP-B; Camp Slayer, Iraq
